SUMMARY:LAILEC Conference
DESCRIPTION:Life-cycle regulation of Data and AI\, Tackling dynamicity and responsibility in complex ecosystems\nIn this year’s edition of the LAILEC Conference\, co-located with the EUH4D Data Forum and the SAS Project Event\, we focus on Data and AI\, together critical enablers for our society to solve complex problems and for our European data economy to thrive. Both data and AI have specific lifecycles\, where dynamicity and evolving features challenge legal and ethical frameworks. \nThe conference aims to discuss the objectives of the European Data Strategy and AI Strategy\, and will explore further the regulatory and governance dimensions of a.o. the concepts of data spaces and trustworthy AI. \nIn the Data Track we offer dedicated panels on the guiding principles and building blocks for the digital economy and zoom in on the importance of data control in different scenarios\, the need for trusted data value chains with suitable allocation of responsibilities and the impact of the fairness principle in data access\, sharing and allocation of data value. \nIn connection\, in the AI Track\, our speakers will engage on the concept of trustworthiness of AI\, its relationship with fundamental rights and dynamic safety and security risks and will discuss the impact of liability issues\, that although challenged by the self-learning capacities of AI and the complex ecosystems\, have an important capacity to significantly increase the levels of trust in AI. \nThe LAILEC conference will source the views of our expert speakers on towards the future avenues for the regulation of Data and AI and their specific lifecycles\, building on the European Commission’s preference\, as expressed in the Data Strategy\, for an “agile approach to governance” that favors “experimentation […]\, iteration\, and differentiation” and the risk-based approach to the regulation of innovation\, already visible in the GDPR and the proposed AI Act. LAILEC will also create room for exchange on the pending legislative initiatives\, such as the AI Act proposal and the expected Data Act proposal. \nLAILEC aims to engage on these topics with a broad community of stakeholders (researchers of different disciplines\, industry\, designers of data spaces\, providers of building blocks -technical and non-technical-\, policymakers\, regulators\, civil society\,..). The objectives of fair\, compliant\, trustworthy data use and AI (and related technology) applications can only be achieved by interdisciplinary efforts and the involvement of a broad range of stakeholders. Join the debate in Leuven on the 29th and 30th of March: \n\nLAILEC Conference day on 29th of March\nUnique opportunity to join the 2 co-located events:\n\nEUH4D Data Forum on 30th of March in the morning\nSAS Project Event on 30th of March in the afternoon

SUMMARY:The Culture of Trustworthy AI. Public debate\, education\, practical learning
DESCRIPTION:In the last few years\, the European Union has made important steps towards a responsible and sustainable Artificial Intelligence (AI) innovation. In 2019\, the High-Level Expert Group delivered the Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy AI and\, even more recently\, the European Commission put forward a proposal for a regulation to address different AI risk levels. However\, these initiatives do not\, alone\, ensure Trustworthy AI. Besides rules and principles\, “Trustworthy AI requires us to build and maintain an ethical culture and mindset through public debate\, education and practical learning.” (HLEG\, 2019). \nThe development of a Trustworthy AI culture poses several challenges to the whole AI ecosystem. The first issue regards how to create meaningful discussions involving different experts but also citizens and people with limited knowledge about AI and its wider implications (public debate). A second problem connects to the equipment needed to help future generations cope with the social and economic changes generated by AI and data-intensive applications (education). Finally\, a third important issue relates to the capacity of AI actors to become familiar with principles\, rules and the plethora of methodologies supporting ethical\, legal and robust AI (practical learning). \nThis workshop will try to explore how we can get closer to a Trustworthy AI culture sharing investigations and good practices moving along the trajectories suggested by Trustworthy AI guidelines: public debate\, education and practical learning. The event is part of the AI4EU project and will give the opportunity to share the results achieved by the AI4EU working groups on Ethical\, Legal\, Social\, Economic and Cultural issues of AI (ELSEC AI). Launched at the end of 2020\, working groups are semi-organised groups bringing together people from different backgrounds and sectors to collaborate on ELSEC AI with a genuine multidisciplinary spirit. \nThe workshop will host a mix of invited and contributed presentations\, as well as panel discussions\, and is open to scholars and practitioners working on Trustworthy and Responsible AI. The event will take place in Venice (Italy) and streamed online to allow remote participation. Registration is free of charge. More details about the workshop location and the program will be announced soon. If you would like to receive further information about the event\, please email  osai@unive.it \nRegistration: Send an email with your name\, surname and affiliation to  osai@unive.it \n© AI4EU

SUMMARY:IoT Week 2021
DESCRIPTION:Next-Generation IoT for a sustainable future\nThe rising awareness of climate change has caused the popularization of sustainability and the realization that we need to do things not only differently\, but better. As focus shifts to finding solutions to climate issues\, technological advancements and innovation present a promising way forward. The Internet of Things\, for example\, which Boston Consulting Group estimates will boom into an $267 billion dollar industry by 2021\, promises to facilitate great leaps in our efforts to transform our places and spaces\, from homes and offices to entire cities\, into sustainable environments. If IoT technologies build on not only established technology\, but also new capabilities in the backend\, such as artificial intelligence\, deep semantic interoperability and novel contractual arrangements like Blockchains\, they will undoubtedly bring fundamental change to all sectors of activity\, improving the way we live and work. \nIn other words\, IoT is likely to be an essential element of the Next Generation Internet\, setting the groundwork for systems and devices of the future. \nEach year\, numerous thought leaders from the worlds of research\, industry\, business\, tech and science shed light on the future of technology and its impact on business and life. \nMore information\, program\, speaker & registration \n
